A TOWN is looking for its own carnival "royalty".

Shildon Town Carnival committee will choose a queen, a princess and two attendants to lead the annual parade at a party next month.

A night of entertainment is planned at Shildon Civic Centre on Saturday, June 7, where members of the Chamber of Trade will make the choices.

Entrants for the contest to choose the Queen and her attendents must be from Shildon and aged over 12. The competition for the Princess is open to youngsters under 12.

John Bowman, a member of the carnival committee, said the event marked the start of celebrations on Saturday, June 14.

He said: "We are hoping that people will come along and show their support for the event."

The carnival has had to cancel plans to have floats in this year's parade because of health and safety advice.

But organisers say they are hoping that the decision will not dampen people's enthusiasm.

Mr Bowman said: "Last year people lined the streets then followed us down to the showground.

"We are hoping that we will have the same kind of support this year. There will be a cash prize for the best dressed group.

"If any local groups, cubs, scouts, pubs etc want to come and join in the fun of the parade, the more the merrier."
