A SCHOOL has been celebrating after being presented with a national award for its work in encouraging pupils to take part in regular sport and healthy exercise.
The Cedars School, in Low Fell, Gateshead, has received a Sportsmark Gold with Distinction from Sport England, in recognition of its commitment to providing top quality sporting facilities.
The school is one of only two special schools in the country to receive the award this year.
It is given to schools which show a continuing commitment to promoting the benefits of physical activity, health and school sport.
The Cedar's sports co-ordinator Liz Neale said: "This is the third time in seven years we have won a Sportsmark award.
"But, it is the first time we have won a gold with distinction, which is excellent news for both staff, pupils, parents and governors.
"Because we cater for young people with disabilities, we not only have to deliver sport in a school curriculum, but also run a lot of out-of-school clubs, including swimming, athletics, games and football.
"Our school caters for up to 60 children throughout the borough, and we work closely with Gateshead Council to meet their sporting needs."
