Richard Blakey and Chris Silverwood both reached notable milestones off the same ball when Yorkshire's Championship game against Glamorgan finally spluttered into life again at Headingley yesterday.

But Yorkshire had the initiative seized from them by a record ninth-wicket unbroken stand between wicketkeeper Mark Wallace and Australian Michael Kasprowicz, which took Glamorgan to 248 for eight at the close when they held a first innings lead of 39.

Replying to Yorkshire's 209, Glamorgan soon hit trouble during a fiery burst of three for 25 from Silverwood who gave England's selectors a reminder that he is still alive and kicking.

In Silverwood's second over, a superb delivery to Adrian Dale climbed off a length for Blakey to take the catch to give the wicketkeeper his 800th victim for Yorkshire and bring the bowler his 400th dismissal in first class cricket.

By way of celebration, Blakey took another four catches but no further ones came his way as Glamorgan rallied strongly in the evening session.

After a blank day on Thursday, more rain came just before yesterday's scheduled start and when play finally did get underway at 12.30pm only 2.4 overs were possible in two sessions before another shower brought forward the lunch interval. Yorkshire, having resumed on 190 for nine were taken safely to 200 and a single batting bonus point by Ryan Sidebottom and Steven Kirby but at 209 Sidebottom played on to one which kept low from Bradford-born Alex Wharf.

Silverwood struck again in the same over by dismissing David Hemp with another good delivery which was nicked to Blakey and the same combination accounted for Ian Thomas to make it 35-3.

Sidebottom had Mike Powell dragging a catch to Michael Lumb at square leg as soon as the left-arm paceman entered the attack and Jonathan Hughes, bowled by a Kirby no-ball on two, moved on to ten before skying a hook towards long leg for Blakey to catch in magnificent style.

Matthew Maynard breezed his way to his half-century off 68 balls but 11 deliveries and one run later he edged Sidebottom to first slip where Yuraj Singh held on to his first catch for his adopted county.

Yorkshire's bowling visibly tired and their chances of picking up a useful first innings lead were destroyed by Wallace and Kasprowicz who batted with increasing confidence in an unbroken ninth wicket stand of 91.

Wallace finished with 77 from 125 balls with seven fours and two sixes while Kasprowicz ended on 34. Yorkshire Phoenix expect to have Darren Gough back to help them slay the Dragons when they come face-to-face with National League champions Glamorgan at Headingley tomorrow.

And standing side-by-side with Gough will be new overseas signing, Yuvraj Singh, who has made a big name for himself as a hard hitting batsman and brilliant fielder in 73 one-day internationals for India.

It will be a tough battle for Yorkshire because Glamorgan Dragons have put everyone to the sword so far, winning each of their three matches, while Phoenix are in the relegation zone after suffering defeats in their last two games.

Yorkshire have been badly let down by their batsmen who capsized to 54 all out against Essex Eagles, their lowest ever one-day score, and the first five in the order fell for 28 against Leicestershire Foxes last week.

Gough will decide shortly before the toss if he has recovered sufficiently from his hamstring strain to play.
