A EURO MP is campaigning for an end to what he claims is a "cartridge con trick".
Yorkshire and Humber MEP David Bowe has called on the European Commission to investigate manufacturers who fit "smart chips" into printer cartridges indicating they are empty when they actually still contain a significant amount of ink.
He said: "I really do think this is a huge issue given the many millions of inkjet cartridges which are used, and disposed of, across Europe.
"It is scandalous that consumers are being given a computer message that a cartridge is out of ink, when it is simply not true.
"What is worse, in some cases, people find their printer is disabled as soon as the smart chip is activated and they are literally forced to install a new cartridge."
