ARCHAEOLOGISTS travelled back in time to recreate the ancient skill of charcoal making.
Tom Gledhill and Roz Nichol began their challenge on Saturday at Killhope Lead Mining Museum, in Weardale, and spent the bank holiday weekend producing charcoal.
The pair are hoping their experiment will provide the fuel for iron smelting which they will do later this year.
The experiment comes after the pair discovered a large number of charcoal pits in the North Pennines.
To produce charcoal, a wood stack is set alight and turf is placed over it to ensure that the wood smoulders rather than flares.
