Hathaway and Cope Stokesley League - League Cup Final - M'brough PO 1 v 0 Thornaby Mandale: Played at Stokesley on Friday, May 16, Thornaby Mandale's dream of lifting four trophies this season ended in the when they went down by a single goal.

With the North Riding Saturday Challenge Cup, Stokesley League Championship and Arthur Reed Shield already in the trophy cupboard, Mandale were favourites to take the League Cup.

However, Middlesbrough Post Office had other ideas and they set about their task with a determination that Mandale found difficult to match.

Defences dominated the game with Mandale's Steve Baker and the Post Offices Michael Youll earning man of the match recognition for their performances at the centre of some solid defending by both sides.

Chances were few and far between with Ian Mills twice testing Gary Poole in the Thornaby Mandale goal and Bradley Murray going close at the other end for Mandale.

Two minutes before half time however, Post Office made the vital breakthrough when Gary Poole could only manage to parry Ian Mills powerful shot and David Mills was on hand to tap home the loose ball.

The second half followed much the same pattern as the first but those chances that did occur tended to fall to the Posties.

Soon after the restart, Ian Mills had a golden opportunity to score a second but his shot flew over the bar with the goal at his mercy while later in the half, a brilliant one handed save from Poole was needed to push a David Mills shot wide.

Lee O Toole had earlier gone through on goal but his shot was well blocked and so the scoreline remained unchanged to the final whistle.

In the Stokesley Sports Club after the game, Mr. Dennis Cope presented medals to the competing sides together with the awards to the officials referee Ian Crocker together with his assistants Andy Marsh and Gordon Turnbull.

The League Championship Winners and runners-up trophies were also presented to the players of Thornaby Mandale and Kings Head while Anthony Gregory received the top scorer trophy.

The league presentation night was held at the Crook Golf Club and the player of the year award went to Chris Fairless of Wearhead United. Lee Furber of Crook Wanderers was top scorer and the Tommy Lye won the award as top referee.

Emergency Services League

Langbaurgh retained second place with a 3-2 win at Darlington. The hosts pushed them all the way, with Matt Lymer only securing all the points in the closing minutes. That was Lymer's second goal of the game, Simon Shaw having scored the other, his first ever goal for Langbaurgh. Fred Wood had netted twice for Darlington, who were unlucky not to get something out of the game.

Sedgefield finished their fixtures with a home win over Stockton. The match was aseven goal thriller, with Sedgefield just edging it by the odd goal. Paul Hardman scored twice, with Dave Carr and Ian Douglas getting one apiece. Douglas' goal was the winner and was an absolute beauty.

Newcastle leapfrogged Sunderland after they won 3-1 in the Tyne-Wear derby. The defeat pretty much ends Saints hopes of catching leaders Tyne and Wear, who were without a fixture this week. It does mean that three teams are still contending for runners up spot with two weeks remaining of the season. Newcastle also have next week's League Cup Final to look forward to against Frankland.

Frankland go into the final in good heart, following their two-goal win over Easington. Both goals were scored by Ian Gibson.

Bowman Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League

POSTCHAISE have won the Second Division title and promotion to the top flight. Meanwhile, Old Shildon have won a Cup treble. They had won the First Division Cup and B&A Trophy, and were also recently crowned League Cup winners at Spennymoor United's Brewery Field.

"I'd like to thank Old Shildon WMC for their support," said Secretary Sharon Headley. "It's been a great season for us, but we couldn't have done it without their fantastic backing."

Postchaise and Old Shildon will be presented with their trophies at the league's end-of-season presentation night, which will be held at Old Shildon WMC on Friday, June 6, when local band Buster will form part of the night's entertainment as well as all the usual awards and presentations.
