Darlington Church and Friendly League
Stillington The Royal are the new holders of the Archbold Trophy, in a hard fought competitive final they came out 2-1 victors over the League Cup holders Darlington RA Youth.
Paul Cleary opened the scoring after 17 minutes with virtually the first real effort on goal for The Royal, ten minutes later the sides were level when Ross Wetherell cracked home through a crowded goalmouth.
The decider came midway through the second half when Shaun Featherstone struck an excellent 25-yard free kick. Youth pushed hard and were unlucky not to take the game into extra time as Royal scrambled away a couple of clearances in the last couple of minutes. The Trophy and momentous were presented by the league chairman Bob Blair.
Congratulations go to Darlington RA Youth who clinched the League Championship to add to the League Cup when they overcame Shildon Elm Road WMC 2-1, who were the side who ran them to a tight finish in the League Cup. The runners up spot will not be decided until this weekend, which is typical of how closely-fought a season it has been.
The two sides, and spectators, had to ensure some heavy down pours of rain making the surface very slippery, but, credit to both teams the pace of the game never altered, Graham Dodsworth opened the scoring for Youth midway through the first half with Thomas Louden equalising with a somewhat bizarre effort, lifting a high ball from the halfway line the bounce caught out the keeper who had to stretch up to catch the ball but went over backwards into the net, five minutes into the second Dodsworth was on hand to slot home what proved to be the winner although with two minutes to go RA Youth somehow scrambled away three Elm Road efforts in a goalmouth melee.
Stillington The Royal kept up their challenge for second spot with four goals in either half against Darlington AFC Greyhound, Paul Cleary topped their scoring with four, a brace went to Simon Hares with one apiece for Kevin Brown and Lee Norman, where Greyhound were unlucky not to get amongst the goals their keeper Paul Saxton once again had a very good game.
Longhorn Hardware Darlington and District League
The Albion 4 v 11 East End WMC
The destination of the league championship went to the final league game of the season and that a local derby. Kevin Baines settled Albion's nerves when he put the home side ahead midway through the first half. As their confidence grew Albion gradually established a few good advantages with Baines' second and one each from the impressive Gavin Bell and substitute Chris Robinson. East end sub Paul Horsley managed to consolidate two minutes from time.
Invitation Trophy Final
Hole In The Wall 0 v 2 Killinghall Ar.
Killie were quickly into their stride and Hole keeper Paul De St Croix pulled off a superb save in only the second minute. As the game settled down it was Killie who were forcing the pace but they couldn't break down a resolute Hole In The Wall rearguard well marshalled by John Laycock in which De St Croix Jeff Coates and Martin Skipsey were outstanding,. Hole continued to rely on breakaways and from one of these David Wilson found himself in the clear a minute from half time but he failed to connect with only the keeper to beat. The second half followed a similar pattern with Dr St Croix pulling off several good saves only for him to be restricted by his opposite number Richard Snowdon whose tremendous reaction save denied Hole In The Wall the lead.
The turning point followed an unfortunate injury to Martin Skipsey which saw him leave the field with a broken nose and the introduction of Killie's Danny Hanafin as it was from the latter's cross that Andy Roberts headed home superbly from 12-yards to finally break Wall's resistance with 15 minutes to go. Philip Rennolds sealed victory with five minutes remaining when he fired home from a similar distance after more super trickery from Hanafin.
The Harold Wilkinson Player of the Year Trophy is shared between David Palmer (Grey Horse) and Terry Greenstreet (Shuttle and Loom) who each received ten man of the match nominations.
Leading scorers were (league goals only): Gary Mitchell (Albion) 34, Andrew Robert (Killinghall Arms) 29, Darren Tate (Grey Horse) 21, Darren Hewitson (Post Boy) 19, Chris Airey (Shuttle and Loom) 18, Adrian Weston (Albion) 18, Kevin Baines (Albion) 18.
