POLICE are seeking help to solve the mystery of a "disappearing" parachutist.
Two people called the emergency services after spotting something fall into the sea near Crimdon, north of Hartlepool. But a search by the coastguard, lifeboats and a police spotter plane failed to find any clues.
Although the incident is officially being logged as a false alarm with good intent, coastguard teams in the area are still monitoring the coastline. Police are appealing for anyone else who saw anything near Hartlepool Golf Club at about 10pm on Saturday to get in touch.
A coastguard spokeswoman said: "The two calls reported that something, thought to have been a parachute with a person on the end of it, had gone into the sea.
"This was also confirmed by several people on the shore."
Witnesses are asked to call police on (01642) 326326.
