AN American flag football team who won a national title are appealing for sponsorship after their kits were stolen.
Youngsters from Darlington's Eastbourne Cardinals need to raise £1,000 to travel to the Great British and European finals in Scotland next month.
The team's football kits were stolen from the back of a car in Thornaby, Teesside, three weeks ago, along with costumes worn by the team's supporters, the Tees Valley Cheerleaders, who come from Darlington and Bishop Auckland.
Cheerleader coach Michele Connell said the team was struggling to survive because of lack of funds.
"We are the English champions, but it is done on a shoestring," she said.
"All of the other teams at the English final get sponsorship and have all this fancy gear. Our lads went out there and played their little hearts out despite having nothing."
Flag football is a non-contact form of American football played by youngsters. The English final in Leicester was the first contest the Cardinals team, aged 12 to 14, has won.
"They have done so well and have been given the chance to do something for their country. But the kits being stolen was a setback and unless we can raise about £1,000 for travel and accommodation in Scotland they won't be able to compete," said Ms Connell.
The cheerleaders will be raising money by packing bags and performing at the Safeway store in Darlington tomorrow.
