SOLDIERS in the Gulf have sent their thanks to Durham pupils who brightened up their lives in the war zone.
Youngsters at Durham Johnston School raised £624 for comfort parcels by holding a non-uniform day.
Sixty-eight packages, containing sweets, toiletries and socks, were posted to the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment.
The day was organised by Sarah Davison, 16, whose cousin Kevin Davison, 23, from Brandon, a former pupil of the school, is with the regiment near Basra.
Lance Corporal Martin Duffy wrote: "We are glad the public back in Blighty are behind us, and that in itself keeps our spirits high.''
Private Jamie Duncan said: "It was a great boost to my morale.
"It's good to know people like yourselves are still thinking of the troops in the Gulf. It is very much appreciated.''
Kevin's father, also called Kevin, said: "It is nice that they have written to let us know they have got the parcels.
"The parcels have brightened up life for the troops and the lads appreciate that people are thinking of them."
