A JUNIOR American football team that won a national title this month is appealing for help after players' kits were stolen.

Darlington's Eastbourne Cardinals, who were crowned this country's American flag football champions on May 17, need to raise £1,000 to travel to the British and European finals in Scotland next month.

The team's football kits were stolen from the back of a car in Thornaby, Teesside, three weeks ago, along with costumes for the Tees Valley cheerleaders, who come from Darlington and Bishop Auckland.

Cheerleader coach Michele Connell said the team was struggling to survive because of a lack of funds.

"We are the English champions but it's done on a shoestring," she said. "All of the other teams at the English final get sponsorship and have all this fancy gear.

"Our lads went out there and played their little hearts out despite having nothing."

"They have done so well and have been given the chance to do something for their country," said Ms Connell. "But the kits being stolen was a setback and unless we can raise about £1,000 for travel and accommodation in Scotland they won't be able to compete."

The cheerleaders will be raising cash by packing shopping bags and performing at Safeway, in Victoria Road, all day this Thursday.
