Durham City ASC: Durham continue to progress in the sport. Alison Mell and Peter Ward have gained places in the national Under-15 squad to train at the ASA summer school at Millfield School in July, and Chris Stephenson has been selected as first reserve.
This was after national trials at Hucknall near Nottingham with several Durham players being assessed along with others from all parts of the UK.
"This is just reward for players who have played and trained hard for a number of years," said Durham water polo secretary Peter Rawlings.
Durham's Anna Richardson, 16, already a member of the GB Under-17 squad, has been invited by the GB team manager to attend an assessment weekend in September for a place in the GB junior under-19 team to compete in the European Championships in 2004.
Sedgefield 75
Sedgefield 75 fielded a young team in the game against Durham School with the exception of leading Great Britain Ladies players Angela Winstanley Smith and Carol Mohan. Sedgefield ran out comfortable winners 14-3. The Sedgefield scorers were Scott Carpenter six, Carol Mohan and Ben Richardson with four each. Sedgefield men's team lost to Newcastle for the first time in three years in the final of the Northumberland and Durham Knockout. Unfortunately due to more important polo events elsewhere Sedgefield were without their leading ex-International players Lee Cooke and George Carpenter senior. The young Sedgefield team lead by Veterans Steven Guy and David Morgan defeated Durham City, Durham University, Catterick and Newcastle University to reach the final.
