Worthington Durham County CIU Summer League: Spennymoor A bounced back from their first defeat to whitewash the visiting Wheatley Hill A and move to the top of the First Division.
Whilst the Moors went up the visitors, who have been among the major trophies for many years, slipped to the foot of the First Division for the first time. The home winners were Eddie Rhodes, John Wilson, Paul Atkinson, Karl Welsh and Paul Biddle.
Newly-promoted, Newhouse made their first win in the top bracket in style when they only dropped one point to the visiting Witton Gilbert. John Rooney senior opened the match with a win for Witton but then the home side took over with wins from Jimmy Hassen, Paul Wright, John Maddox and Ronnie Pearson.
Brandon slipped to their first defeat of the season when they went down in the decider at Sherburn Village. The visitors went ahead through John Hall but Adrian Twist and Scott Mallaburn with a 32 break put the Village ahead. Brian Graham equalised for Brandon but John Bower took the decider for Sherburn when he beat Colin Goodrick.
Willington also lost their unbeaten tag when they went down in the decider at Fishburn A after twice leading. Tom Parkin put Willington ahead but John Griffin levelled. Jeremy Martin restored the visitors' lead only to see Brian Quest equalise. In the decider Fishburn's Wayne Oliver beat Arthur Goldsborough.
Newton Aycliffe made their first win of the season when they edged through against the visiting Shotton Palms. Bill Barrigan and John Briddick put the home side ahead but Paul Hickman put in a 58 break to take the third frame for Shotton. Ronnie hall clinched certain victory for Newton Aycliffe, whilst Jimmy Evans took the final frame for the Palms.
Meadowfield retained their unbeaten record in the Second Division after they won by the odd point at Wingate in a match decided on the final black in four of the frames. Craig Hughes, Ian Hodgson and John Jackson put Meadowfield into a winning position but Dave Hammond and Paul Harrison made the score respectable by taking the final two frames for Wingate.
Ferryhill moved up to share the top spot with Meadowfield after they only dropped one point to the visiting Langley Park, who had Peter Morgan as their only winner. The home points came from Mark Wilson, Ian Fawcett, Bernie Jones and Glyn Toas.
Spennymoor B are in equal third spot in the Second Division after retaining their unbeaten record with an odd point win at Crook Belle Vue. John Warriner and Harold Lomax won for Crook with Micky Anderson and Phil Wilson levelling. In the decider the Moors Alan Rowell beat Ken Rider.
Crowtrees share the third spot with Spennymoor B after they recovered form a two points deficit at Durham City. Gary Ward and Brian Dunn put the home side ahead but Steven Armstrong and Keith McLauchlan equalised. In the decider, Crowtrees Sonny Hann beat Eric Wright.
Wheatley Hill B moved into mid-table in the Second Division after they only dropped one point to the visiting Stanley Central. Jock Frost, Tony Ellison, Steve Cave and Dave Blyth won for the Hill with Harry Grimes taking the Central's lone point.
Bearpark lead the Third Division after they retained their unbeaten record at Hunwick, where they only dropped one point. John Bate took the first frame for Hunwick but the visitors then took over with wins from Glen Morton, Alan Smith, David Jackson and Shaun Easter.
Coundon had a similar success on their visit to Sacriston, where Jeff Evans was the only home winner, although Mark Appleby put in a 39 break before going down to Frank Nicholson. The other Coundon points came from Steven Bennett, Mally Ryder and Stuart Neil, who was making his debut.
Tow Law A reached the unfamiliar heights of being equal second after they whitewashed the visiting Leeholme B, but the score flattered the home side for three of the frames were very close. The winners for the Lawyers were Tommy Williams, Doug Watson, Charlie Donaghy, heppell Hodgson and Stephen Laing.
New Durham beat the visiting Fishburn B by the odd point thanks to wins from Gordon Bowes, Thomas Cairns and Brian Birks, whilst Jamie Hodgson and Barry Underwood, who was making a return to league snooker after a long lay-off, scored for the visitors.
Leeholme A came back strongly to beat the visiting Tow Law B in the decider. Karl Thompson put the home side ahead but then John Wilson and Lee Stockdale put the visitors in front. Lawrence Jones levelled the match and Barry Shaw beat the Lawyers, Paul Chollerton in the decider.

* The entire league was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Ernie McEleavey, a well-respected player for Billy Row for many years and then a player at Tow Law after Billy Row dropped its affiliation. The Officials and all the players, particularly those from Tow Law, send their condolences to the family.

Worthington CIU Winter League
The Annual Presentation Evening was held in Spennymoor Club with the presentation party being made up of Colin Armstrong, the Branch President, John Mattimoe, the District Delegate and Mick McGlasham, the recently appointed Branch Secretary. The new secretary was given the honour of presenting the trophies and began by presenting the league Championship trophy to Spennymoor A, with the runners-up awards going to Old Shildon.
The Second Division Championship was won by Bearpark with Wingate the runners-up. Coundon took the Third Division title with Sacriston the runners-up. The Team Knock Out Cup went to Wingate with Willington taking the runners-up awards. The Team Plate was won by Spennymoor A with Leeholme A the runners-up.
Paul Atkinson of Spennymoor A took the League Singles Championship with Thomas Cairns of New Durham the runner-up. The Pairs title went to George Chapman and Andrew Aisbitt of Cockton Hill with Bob Reay and Ronnie Peacock taking the runners-up trophies.
The League Handicap Singles was won by Karl Thompson of Leeholme with Stephen Coates of Langley Park the beaten finalist. Dave Walker of Wheatley Hill won the Curry Cup after beating Ian Renwick of Witton Gilbert in the final. Charlie Donaghy of Tow Law won the Billards Trophy with Jimmy Evans of Shotton Palms the runner-up. The Harry Little Memorial Handicap Pairs was won by Gordon Bowes and Thomas Cairns of New Durham with Brian Graham and John hall of Brandon the runners-up.
The Trophy for the most wins in the First Division went to Paul Biddle of Spennymoor; in the Second Division to Geoff Howe of Wingate and in the Third Division the award was shared by John Warriner of Crook Belle Vue and Frank Nicholson of Coundon.
The top break prize in the First Division went to Michael Pratt of Old Shildon with a break of 116; in the Second Division the award went to John Bourne of Wingate for his 67 and in the Third Division to Frank Nicholson of Coundon for his 61.
South West Durham Association
Bishop Auckland Golf Club dropped only their second point of the season when they visited Hopetown but are still dominating the First Division. Darlington Cricket Club A lost valuable ground when they only took one point from the visiting Darlington Snooker Club A. Barnard Castle Glaxo just managed to hold on to their unbeaten record in the Second Division but they were held to a home draw against Bishop Auckland Gents B.
