Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers: Fourteen Harriers took part in the Friends of Fountains School ten-mile Road Race last week, which was the first race in the Black Sheep series.
The race started in pouring rain but conditions improved after a while to allow runners to concentrate on the testing, hilly course. Tim Field of Sunderland Harriers was the winner in a time of 55.12 minutes and John Yates was in 12th place in 63.14.
Alan Harman finished 63rd in 74.51, Richard Jones 65th in 75.04 closely followed by Oliver Harrison in 75.23. Alasdair Thorpe was 70th in 76.14, Steve Harrison 86th in 79.18, Peter Sacnlon 126th in 84.50, Kaye Mechie 132nd in 85.27, Nicola Thorpe 152nd in 91.31, Sally Harrison 165th in 94.38, Jo Fambely 173rd in 100.12, Pamela Sherlock 178th in 104.20 and Marian Codling 183rd in 106.20. There were 193 finishers in this race set in picturesque surroundings.
Harriers travelled to Richmond on Thursday evening to take part in a Harrogate League race, but unfortunately it had to be cancelled because of a serious accident on the A66. The next event is the 10 mile Road Race at Thirsk on Sunday.

AN exceptional amount of Quakers attended the Pier to Pier race as one of the final club championship races. Despite the weather Alasdair Tatham had yet another excellent run finishing third overall out of 598 competitors in a time of 40:23, followed by Wayne Bramley, 23rd, 44:54. Dawn Richardson took second lady prize to finish 40th overall in 46:09. A number of Quakers have been taking to the Cleveland Hills to compete in Middlesbrough's fell series. On Tuesday, May 13, Ken Maynard finished sixth out of 86 competitors in the Carlton Challenge in a time of 36:05, followed by Paul Figg, tenth, 37:26, Alistair MacKenzie, 13th, 38:04, Andy Henderson, 14th, 38:23, Kendra White, 34th, 42:14, Scott Archbold, 41st, 43:45, Keith Richardson, 53rd, 46:12, Barrie Kirtley, 56th, 46:33, Tony Flinn, 73rd, 49:40, Rupurt Booth, 84th, 55:13, Harry Manuel, 85th, 61:25 and Kev Shevels, 86th, 61:36.
On Thursday, May 8, the first White Horse Handicap was held.
Beverley Snook of the Quakers was first home, completing the 5.5 mile course including a river crossing in 49:12. Second home was daughter Alexandra-Marie Snook in 39:14.

Ossy Oiks fell race was held on Tuesday, April 29. Andy Henderson was first home for the club finishing 16th out of a total of 95 runners in a time of 60:34, followed by Joe Hutchinson, 56th, 69:04, Scott Archbold, 71st, 72:35 and Dave Mason, 74th, 72:56.
This year's Hamsterley Forest Run is being staged on Sunday, June 1. As usual the event will be comprised of a 10K main race and a 3K fun run. Start times are 11am and 10.30am respectively from the Visitor Centre at Hamsterley Forest. All proceeds from the races go to one of the club's adopted charities, The Butterwick Hospice. The next Quakers Durham Dales Fell Race will be held on Sunday, 15 June. Chapelfell Top will consist of 1322 feet over 4 miles. Register on the day at the Golden Lion pub, St John's Chapel, Weardale. GR 886379. Start time 11am.There will also be a junior fell race of 2 miles commencing 10.30 am for under 16's. The club's 4th annual presentation night will be held on Saturday, 28 June.
