FIVE people were arrested yesterday after a man was shot in the centre of a North-East village.
The 35-year-old victim, who has not yet been named, was taken to hospital with a bullet in his liver.
The shooting took place in the early hours in High Street, Wrekenton, near Gateshead.
An anonymous caller tipped off police shortly after 2am and armed officers arrested two men aged 41 and 31, and three women, aged 23, 41 and 42.
They have been taken to separate police stations across Tyneside and were yesterday continuing to be questioned.
Detective Chief Inspector Winton Keenen, of Gateshead East CID, said: "We are trying to establish the circumstances and motives leading to the shooting."
The man was being treated in Gateshead's Queen Elizabeth Hospital but his injury was not thought to be life-threatening.
Police cordoned off a large area of the High Street while forensic searches took place. The cordon stretched in a triangle between the Co-op Superstore, the Royal Oak public house and the rear of Stormont Main Club.
