FIFTEEN homes on the site of a former auction mart in Barnard Castle were praised yesterday when they were opened by MP Derek Foster.
Mr Foster said the development for the over-50 age group was extremely tasteful and in keeping with other buildings in the town.
He said: "It just shows what we can do when we really try."
The development has 12 two-bedroomed flats, two one-bedroomed flats and a three-bedroomed house. The project was carried out by the Three Rivers Housing Group with the support of Teesdale District Council.
Rents are £48 or £49 for the flats and £58 for the house.
Tenant Rita McClurg said, "I'm delighted with my flat. It is bright and airy, and the kitchen units are really well designed."
Another resident, Pam Brannen, said: "The flats are excellent and so handy for the shops. It's a wonderful place to live."
Mr Foster said he wished there could be many more social housing schemes as good as the development, but young people as well as the over-50s should be able to move in at affordable rents.
