THE 800-year-old tradition of planting a Penny Hedge in Whitby Harbour has taken place.
According to local legend, the hedge has to be built and withstand three tides as a penance for the murder of a hermit by three noblemen.
The Abbot of Whitby ordered that the hedge should be built from stakes cut from a local wood, and if it failed to withstand the tides the noblemen would forfeit their land.
Lol Hodgson, Lord of the Manor of Fylingthorpe, led the building operation.
