A TOWN in the Dales has been described by some as one of the most beautiful historical places in England.
To celebrate, a Heritage Day is taking place in Richmond next Tuesday, when visitors will be offered a choice of tours to see the attractions the town has to offer.
People will be shown around the town's museums, its gardens, and to buildings of historical importance, some of which are being restored for use by the local community.
Heritage Day will begin at 9.45am with a short video and introduction at the Town Hall, followed by the cutting of a "Corporation Cake" - made to a recipe more than 300 years old.
It is hoped the day will reinforce Richmond's reputation as a key tourist destination as well as an attractive place to live.
The mayor, Stuart Parsons, said: "Richmond is a great town with a lot to offer as a tourist attraction.
"We want to draw attention to ongoing developments and projects as well as celebrate the town's rich historical heritage.
"As well as taking planned tours, visitors will see other sights, including the historic, cobbled Market Place and the 18th Century obelisk."
