THE North-East's only Tory Euro MP is calling for a referendum on the proposed EU constitution.
Martin Callanan, a former Gateshead councillor, said that if people can be given a vote on regional government, there should be one for a much bigger issue like the EU.
He is urging people to sign a petition calling for them to be given a say.
The controversial new constitution proposes, among other things, an EU foreign minister to conduct foreign policy.
Mr Callanan said: "The Government is pulling the wool over the eyes of the British people.
"A European Constitution would mean a fundamental change to the British way of life. It is only fair that the people should be allowed to decide on their future.
"Conservatives have been pushing for more co-operation and less harmonisation, but the Government seems determined to sign away crucial areas of national competence.
"The Government intends giving the people of the North-East a referendum on whether they want a regional assembly, so how can they justify not granting one on the EU constitution?"
