A Sedgefield couple whose romance blossomed during the Second World War have celebrated 60 years of marriage.
John Hill, originally from Warwickshire, was stationed at the military base in Sedgefield from 1941, and met Rachel Stubbs at a camp dance. The couple married on June 2, 1943, at the village's St Edmund's Church.
After being stationed in Germany, Mr and Mrs Hill settled in the village and raised a son, Geoffrey, and daughter, Joyce.
Mr Hill worked for the then Sedgefield District Council as a painter and decorator and Mrs Hill was a nurse at the former Winterton Hospital.
Yesterday, the couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at home, after a family lunch at Hardwick Hall on Sunday.
