GAY couples will be allowed to "marry" in a North-East borough.
The first same sex commitment ceremonies in the region took place in Darlington last month.
Yesterday, councillors agreed to allow the ceremony, which has no legal status, to take place in east Cleveland, including Guisborough Registrar Office and Gisborough Hall.
Newcastle and South Tyneside councils have also agreed to allow commitment ceremonies to take place on council-approved venues.
Yesterday, councillors on Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council cabinet committee agreed to allow the ceremonies, which will also be available to heterosexual couples. Civic naming ceremonies for babies and public re-affirmation of marriage vows will also be accepted.
Councillors made no mention of the issue of same sex commitment ceremonies during a brief debate on the subject yesterday.
It is hoped the new services will help raise revenues for the council.
The ceremonies will cost between £80 and £300, depending on venue and date.
