A PROJECT that teaches children about environmental issues has begun in Sunderland.
Over ten days, 1,700 pupils will take part in the award-winning Eco Rangers, now in its fifth year, at Herrington Park, near Penshaw.
The youngsters are invited to tackle interactive challenges on subjects such as responsible dog ownership, recycling and conserving water.
The project features a super-hero character called Eco Ranger and his enemy, Trasher, who intends to destroy the environment.
The project is funded by the County Durham Environmental Trust and organised by Sunderland City Council.
City council environmental health officer Norma Johnston said: "Eco Rangers gives children an exciting and enjoyable introduction to the environment, encouraging them to take more responsibility for their own surroundings, and we're delighted it has received funding for another year."
John Wearmouth, chairman of the trust, said: "Eco Rangers is a fun project that gives young people the chance to experience nature, the environment and conservation in a number of different and exciting ways.
"As Eco Rangers, they will be introduced to ideas they can use on a regular basis to care about the environment for the rest of their daily lives."
