A PIONEERING affordable housing initiative has won national recognition for excellence in design after landing two awards.
The Poplar Tree Gardens apartments in Sixth Avenue, York, are the first outside London to be factory-built - and could pave the way for high quality affordable housing throughout the UK.
The £2.2m scheme by rented homes provider Yorkshire Housing Group has been voted the best Housing Association Development in the UK by the Nat-ional HomeBuilder Design Awards.
In addition, the scheme has been presented with a Civic Trust Award Commendation, which recognises excellence in architecture.
The four-storey block of 24 apartments was built using modular technology, which enables the apartments to be pre-built in a factory and then assembled on site.
They were developed by Yorkshire Housing in partnership with City of York Council and were manufactured by Yorkon, a subsidiary of Portakabin.
