RETIRED teacher Brian Blackburn is to be honoured for giving 34 years of support to the village hall at Gainford.
He has just stepped down after 28 years as secretary, and before that was on the committee for six years.
He was noted for giving friendly help and advice to all the groups using the building, as well as running football, cricket and tennis clubs. He was also a Scout Cub leader for a time.
His wife, Renee, also did a lot of work for the hall, including a spell as treasurer, but like him has decided to take life easier.
Yesterday, Mr Blackburn said: "I really enjoyed working at the hall, which is a busy place with lots of different activities. I suppose I was helping the community, but did not think of it that way."
Mr and Mrs Blackburn were guests of honour when the rest of the committee held a social evening for them in the hall yesterday.
Hall chairman John Robinson said Mr Blackburn had made a wonderful contribution to village life, thanks to his expertise, energy and enthusiasm.
