ENGLAND are surviving the early loss of Alec Stewart and Anthony McGrath to remain in charge of the Riverside's first Test.
Stewart added just one run to his overnight score of 67 before he was trapped leg before by Heath Streak.
McGrath was becalmed for much of the morning but, just as he was beginning to find his form, he edged Andy Blignaut to wicketkeeper Tatenda Taibu to fall for 81.
Richard Johnson smashed 24 off just 14 balls, and his dismissal by Blignaut brought Durham boy Steve Harmison to the wicket.
Harmison received a huge reception from the home crowd, and he was 10 not out at lunch with England 385 for eight.
