THREE off the reel was the score for Maunby trainer David Barron and jockey Dean Mernagh on Friday last and Saturday - and the first one was our nap of last Friday!
That was Nathan Brittles at Catterick on Friday, the 40th winner in 20 years' ownership for a delighted Aldbrough St John couple, Evelyn and Kevin Shaw, who share the winner with Steve Vickers, a Birmingham City footballer.
The David and Dean roadshow moved to Scotland next day, where Thornaby Green and Mr Lear both won at Musselburgh.
Mark Johnston is irrepressible. He had an Ayr double, both partnered by Keith Dalgleish, on Friday, while Darryll "Dazzler" Holland won at Catterick for him. Kevin Darley had an Ayr treble, including one for Settrington trainer John Quinn, but did not win on any Kingsley House runners that day.
George Duffield does well whenever booked by Johnston and on Saturday won on Atlantic Quest at Musselburgh. None other than Frankie Dettori was in the saddle on Leicester Square, winner at the track of nearly the same name on Monday. Duffield also landed a win on Kahyasi Princess at Carlisle that afternoon.
Beverley's evening meeting on Wednesday saw the trainer pass the 50 mark for the year, with a cracking four-timer. Attraction won the Hilary Needler Stakes and will go on to the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. Events kicked off with Coolbythepool, continued with Great Scott and ended with Penny Cross. Kevin Darley rode Coolbythepool and Keith Dalgleish had a treble on the other three.
Desert Deer, who jibbed at the stalls at the Lockinge, passed a stalls test at Thirsk on Monday and is set for the Queen Anne Stakes at the Royal meeting. Johnston will send Russian Valour to the Norfolk and Pearl Of Love for the Chesham. But his pair today in the Coronation Cup at Epsom are Bandari and Zindabad. Our good wishes go with them.
Among other likely entries at Ascot from here is the Bryan Smart-trained Monsieur Bond, sixth to Derby entry Refuse To Bend in the 2,000 Guineas. The Hambleton handler, who had a Catterick Saturday double, did not run him at the weekend in order to go straight to the Royal meeting, for either the St James's Palace or the Jersey Stakes.
Tim Easterby has also had an excellent week, the highlight of which was the win at Newmarket by Dazzling Bay in the £40,000-added Coral Sprint Handicap. Next on the agenda is the William Hill Trophy at York.
Kevin Darley rode two for Tim Easterby at Newcastle on Wednesday, the second for owner Mrs Janis Macpherson. He was beaten in the next race on Tedstale by Blythe Spirit, trained by Richard Fahey for Mrs Macpherson.
Lynda Ramsden has been quiet of late but at Leicester got off the mark with Arcalis, Jamie Spencer causing hearts to stop when he unshipped just past the line. He is booked for O'Brien's Balestrini tomorrow in the Derby. But all was well and he went on to Thirsk to win for James Bethell that evening. Mrs Ramsden's second winner of the week was the David Brotherton homebred Cape Royal at Nottingham.
Apprentice Natalia Gemelova had her first racecourse win on Wednesday night last week on The Wizard Mul for Wilf Storey at Ripon.
Three juveniles by the same stallion, Wizards King, are for syndication at the stable: ring the trainer on 01207 255259.
THE JUMPS SCENE
Apologies to two fine Middleham women trainers. Last week's results and report credited the wrong trainer for Royal Castle's win at Cartmel: Kate Walton was the successful handler, and not Kate Milligan as we wrongly said.
