FORMER Darlington manager David Hodgson has made his move to become the next manager of Hartlepool United.
Hodgson, out of management since leaving Feethams, is believed to have formally applied for the post, which became available seven days ago when Mike Newell was told his contract would not be renewed.
The former Liverpool and Middlesbrough striker spent four years at Feethams before departing in 2000 after losing to Peterborough in the Division Three play-off final.
Since then he has remained active in the game, working as a international scout for Preston North End and acting as an agent.
Ironically, Hodgson is one of two former Feethams chiefs in contention, along with Brian Little.
Pool's owners are trying to establish if Steve Cotterill is interested in the post as they step up their hunt for the man to lead Pool in a new division next season.
Their chances of landing Cotterill increased last night when Steve Coppell announced he is staying as Brighton manager - the ex-Sunderland coach was among the names linked with the post.
Hodgson was keen on the York job, which surprisingly went to 27-year-old skipper Chris Brass, and was shortlisted for the position at Rochdale. He was interviewed for the Spotland post, but missed out when Alan Buckley was the surprise choice.
Another name in the frame at Rochdale, Steve Parkin, is also interested in the Victoria Park position.
After four years away from the day to day involvement as manager, Hodgson wants the chance to lead Pool in Division Two next season - despite the long and passionate association he had with Darlington. Ironically his last visit to Victoria Park ended in controversial circumstances, when he was struck by a coin during the play-off semi-final in 2000.
Quakers won the first leg, but Hodgson, a passionate character on the touchline, was pelted with coins by Pool followers on the Mill House Terrace behind the dug outs and later, Hodgson's No1 striker, Marco Gabbiadini was punched as he left the field.
But despite his strong Darlington links, Hodgson is willing to start afresh in management and knows the Pool position is an attractive proposition.
* Today is the last day for supporters to take advantage of discounted season tickets. The club shop is open until 5pm and sales are now approaching last year's figure.
