YOUNG people in County Durham can now prove their age to bus companies.
Free under-14 bus cards are to be issued by the county council to young people who look older than their years. The card, which can be used any time, any day, proves they are entitled to half-price bus travel.
More than 25 comprehensive schools are issuing the cards to pupils but, if schools are not taking part, they can be obtained by post from the authority.
The cards can be used for all bus journeys in County Durham and to travel to and from adjoining areas, as long as people get on or off at a stop in the county.
Once teenagers reach 14, they can apply for a Durham County IIC card, which allows 14 to 16-year-olds to travel half-price on all buses after 5pm on schooldays, and at any time during holidays and weekends.
To get an under-14 card, people should take an application form and a photograph to school, or apply to the Public Transport Group, Durham County Council, County Hall, Durham, DH1 5UQ.
