POLICE are taking steps to ensure the safety of runners and spectators during the 23rd annual Blaydon Race on Monday.
More than 3,500 runners will take part in the road race, which starts in Collingwood Street, Newcastle, at 7pm, and finishes 5.7 miles away at Blaydon Shopping Precinct, near Gateshead.
Police will close roads within the city centre for about 25 minutes, from 6.50pm. The roads affected are Mosley Street, Collingwood Street, Westgate Road, Clayton Street West, Westmorland Road, Marlborough Crescent, Railway Street and Plummer Street.
From 7.15pm to 8.15pm, Shibdon Road, in Blaydon, will be closed east of Blaydon Bank.
