TWO community projects were launched yesterday with visits from their local MPs.
North Durham MP Kevan Jones opened the first dedicated drop-in centre in Derwentside for people suffering from dementia and their carers.
The Alzheimer's Society was able to turn its offices in Consett into a day club and drop-in centre after being awarded a £29,000 grant.
Staff have moved their offices elsewhere in the building to make room for the development, which will offer computer access and a library.
Money for the refurbishment came from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, the Chase charity, the Northern Rock Foundation, the County Durham Foundation and the Single Regeneration Budget.
In nearby Ebchester, Government Chief Whip and North-West Durham MP Hilary Armstrong launched construction work on a £450,000 sports and arts centre at Ebchester CE Primary School.
The project was funded through the Government's Space for Sport and Arts scheme.
Ms Armstrong said: "I'm delighted to be starting work on the new building.
"This is a great opportunity for the school and is a big investment in Ebchester.
"The new sports hall will not only benefit the children, but also the whole of the community as it will be available for use outside of school hours."
