PUPILS and staff at a school in Middlesbrough celebrated the opening of a £250,000 arts and sports centre.
The sports ground has a sprung floor, art area, changing rooms, offices, a kitchen and storage area, and will help the children enjoy a range of activities.
The chairman of Middlesbrough Council, Councillor Peter Porley, opened the building at Park End Primary School, which was funded through the Government's New Opportunities Fund.
Headteacher Sue Gent said: "We were thrilled to receive such an important investment, and watching the building develop and come into use has been exciting for our pupils.
"New activities will be available to pupils and local people. I am confident this will help strengthen our links with the local community, as well as generating a wave of enthusiasm among pupils and staff."
The Government award is part of a programme to improve facilities at schools and allow them to be used by the whole community.
Coun Porley said: "Park End Primary School is one of the community's greatest assets and these new facilities will enable it to provide an even better start for children."
