MINERS, policemen and suffragettes wearing authentic costumes helped recall a village's past at the weekend.
Wheatley Hill History Club held its third annual local history day, on the theme of Mining and the First World War, at Wheatley Hill Workingmen's Club on Saturday.
It featured a range of activities and demonstrations, including a First World War kitchen, and attracted about 400 visitors.
Among them were 40 Durham University students keen to gain an insight into the region's mining heritage.
Margaret Hedley, the history club's chairwoman, said: "It started off as a fundraiser and became so successful, that we've held it every year since.
"Last year, we launched The Thornley Coal Company book at local history day, and we are hoping to launch the sequel at next year's."
The latest event, in aid of local history research, raised £640 through the sales of books, postcards, and census returns from the area; a raffle and tombola, and a small admission charge.
