FAMILIES were invited to try their hand at fan-making at a workshop on Saturday.
Hosted by the Oriental Museum, in Durham, the workshop formed part of the museum's latest exhibition of Japanese magic lantern slides, titled Tea, Rice and Cherry Blossom.
It shows scenes of daily life in Japan between 1890 and 1911, including images of rice and tea farmers, the traditional tea ceremony, working women and geisha girls.
The images are taken from the museum's large collection of Japanese magic lantern slides, which have never before been exhibited to the public.
English travellers in Japan bought the slides as souvenirs of their trips, and, once home, staged shows for family and friends.
The exhibition runs until June 29.
