Local youngsters were in medal winning form in the North of England Under-20 championships at Liverpool. Leslie Richards, the reigning schools and inter-counties champion, spun the 1.75kg platter out to 46.50m to win the discus title and Charles Hogarth reached 45.68 to win the hammer event. Stephen Gill again improved on his 400m time clocking 49.17 for the silver.
Pete Vickers, double NE champion indoor and out, set the fastest time in the heats but was adjudged to have false starts in the finals.
In the Under-17 section Dean Daniel repeated his indoor success by claiming the 200m title in a speedy 22.17. James Minter, also a top steeplechaser, turned his attention to the two-lap race and won by seven metres. John Taylor took second place in the 1500m with Gavin Hill third in the discus while Tyrone Crow just missed a medal by one hundredth of a second in the 400m.
Lewis McElwee, a double winner in the sprints at the North London championship, repeated this marvellous feat by winning the 100m by three metres from S Dale (Morpeth) who was also second to McElwee in the long sprint.
Luke Stockton was the final winner clocking 2:09.3 in the 800m.
