A MAN has died after a collision between two jet-skis on one of the region's lakes.
The 38-year-old was left unconscious in the water following the accident on a lake at Ripon racecourse, in North Yorkshire.
Despite attempts by members of the public and paramedics, the Sheffield man, who has not been named, died in Harrogate District Hospital.
The rider of the other jet-ski was uninjured in the collision, which took place at 3.30pm on Saturday.
The lake is used regularly at weekends by jet-skiers, a pastime that some local fishermen believe to be dangerous.
One fisherman said: "This is an accident that has been waiting to happen for a long time.
"There are sometimes ten or 12 jet-skiers on the water at once."
The 29-acre lake is leased to the Jet Ski Club, and jet-skiers pay the club an annual membership to make use of it.
Club spokesman Andy Kay said the crash had come as a shock.
He said: "The last accident that I recall was back in 1993, and then it was only a broken leg.
"The membership is kept very low here. It is just 16 this year, and generally speaking, the water does not get too busy."
Police have notified the Health and Safety Executive about the accident.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Harrogate police on (01423) 505541.
