A NORTH city is to be home to some of the first environmentally friendly homes in the country.
York Housing Association has made a deal for the St Nicholas Fields, in the city, and will use the land to construct 18 green homes off Lawrence Street.
The two and three-bedroom properties will be constructed from home-grown timber, the roofs will be made from recycled slates, while insulation materials will include recycled newspapers.
Taps and toilets have been designed to keep water use to a minimum. The development is also next to a nature reserve.
York Housing Association's development and property manager, John Gilham, said: "We are environmentally and socially concerned about providing affordable housing while, at the same time, reducing the running costs for tenants.
"Benefits of the scheme will include significantly reduced heating costs - possibly as low as £1 a week."
