MIDDLESBROUGH Council is urging town centre workers to leave their cars at home to help beat traffic congestion as preparations continue for tomorrow's England match.

More than 35,000 people are expected to come to the town by road and rail and authorities have been making plans for months to ensure things go smoothly.

The council fears the streets will become too congested and has suggested alternatives to its employees to facilitate travelling to work.

"We are asking employees to use public transport or share cars wherever possible to leave more space for visitors," said Councillor Barry Coppinger, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for public protection.
