NEW leisure opportunities will be offered following the takeover of two east Durham sports centres.
National leisure operator Leisure Connection took over the management of Peterlee and Seaham Leisure Centres from Easington District Council on April 1.
Now it plans to offer a range of activities, by establishing Harpers Fitness Clubs at both centres.
Malcolm Grinstead, Leisure Connection contract manager at Easington, said: "Whilst an extensive range of the latest exercise equipment is attractive to potential members, we believe that the friendly feel and non-intimidating atmosphere of Harpers is what keeps members happy and coming back for more."
The clubs will include a comprehensive range of fitness equipment, with free weights and separate areas set aside for stretching exercises.
Members will be able to choose from several terrestrial and Sky television channels to watch as they exercise, or listen to one of several radio stations.
The dance studios at both leisure centres are being refurbished, and by the end of June, will accommodate several new exercise classes, including Body Pump, Pilates, and Boxercise.
From September, Peterlee Leisure Centre will also offer a range of water-based activities for children, adults and families.
Camp Energy, a fully-supervised play scheme will operate during school holidays.
In term time, children will be able to take part in activities through Planet Action and a soccer school.
Both centres will offer a choice of children's birthday parties.
