A FUNDRAISING appeal has been launched by hospital staff to create a rooftop conservatory and garden.
Staff at the University Hospital of Hartlepool's rehabilitation unit hope to brighten up stays for long-term patients.
Most of the people using the two wards which make up the unit are elderly and recovering from conditions including broken hips, amputations and strokes.
The garden development is designed in particular to provide a tranquil haven for those patients who remain in hospital for up to ten months.
Now, staff are appealing to local businesses and residents to help them raise the £60,000 which is needed to finance the project.
Carol Tunstall, manager of the rehabilitation unit, said: "Patients who spend long periods of time in hospital can be at greater risk of becoming mildly depressed.
"While an awful lot of effort already goes into making the patient environment as pleasant as possible, we feel these facilities would be a valuable boost to our patients' recovery.
"Gardens and conservatories have many therapeutic properties and by taking part in outdoor activities, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the fresh air, patients will be taking huge steps towards regaining many lost skills and their self-esteem."
