Police are appealing for help to formally identify a pensioner whose body was found in his home on Tuesday.
Officers discovered the man at his home in Wycombe Street, Darlington, after neighbours said they had not seen him for some time.
He is believed to be Arthur Ratcliffe, 75, and police believe he died some weeks ago. His body was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital, where a post mortem examination was being carried out last night, although police believe there were no suspicious circumstances.
Mr Ratcliffe, who last drew his pension on March 3, was said to have led an insular life.
Coroner's officer PC Linda Bentham said inquiries had revealed no traces of friends or relatives.
Anyone who can help police is asked to call (01325) 467681.
