YOUNG musicians have struck a chord with a charity by raising £1,200.

Last month 60 pupils from Durham School performed in the annual Music for a Summer's Evening event in the school hall.

They entertained around 200 guests, who also enjoyed wine and a meal.

The event, now in its ninth year, featured a range of instruments and musical styles, and included the orchestra, jazz bands, choirs and the school's big band.

Last week, pupils presented a cheque for the £1,200 raised to Cancer Research.

Director of music Roger Muttitt said: "It's a concert but in a nice, relaxed atmosphere, and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

"We've raised money for Cancer Research before, as well as other charities like St Cuthbert's Hospice.

"I think our musicians have probably raised nearly £9,000 over the years."
