AN INNOVATIVE scheme will see homes in Hambleton having their own life-saving "message in a bottle".

Thousands are expected to take part in the project, which is designed to help the emergency services work more efficiently. People will be encouraged to conceal emergency information inside a container stored in the refrigerator.

"There is a great deal of concern amongst many people about what would happen if they fell victim to an unexpected emergency while on their own," said Hambleton Community Safety Partnership manager, Chris Fields.

"Who would tell the emergency services what medication they take, what they are allergic to and what time the children need collecting from school.

"The Message in a Bottle scheme addresses these problems. It knows no boundaries when it comes to age, and it prevents unnecessary and potentially life-threatening delays."

A small, clearly labelled waterproof plastic bottle will be kept in the refrigerator containing contact numbers, drugs details, long-term conditions and allergies. A label on the door and on the inside of the main access door to the house signals the container's presence.

"We chose the fridge because not only is it easy to find in most homes, in the event of a fire it is the one item which is likely to survive the longest," said Mr Fields.
