HARTLEPOOL UNITED chairman Ken Hodcroft last night revealed there are around 24 'serious applications' to succeed Mike Newell in the Victoria Park hot-seat.

Ever since Newell was told his contract was not going to be renewed last month a number of names have been linked with the post.

Former Middlesbrough star Tony Mowbray, who has just returned from holiday, ex-York City boss Terry Dolan and former Darlington bosses Brian Little and Dave Hodgson are just four thought to be in with a chance.

But Hodcroft, expected to start interviewing candidates next week, has warned he is prepared to bide his time in a bid to appoint the right man.

"As with any manager's job which becomes available, you are snowed under with people applying. We have had applications from the north of Scotland to southern parts of England," said the Pool supremo, who is looking to name his third new manger since taking over at the club.

"We've had a couple of dozen or so of what we would class as serious applications for the job and we have been reviewing them this week.

"We have drawn up a list of those we want to see and we'll be arranging first interviews in the near future, both in Aberdeen and England.

"We will then reduce the number to a short-list, make our evaluation and reference check and if necessary interview again."

Hodcroft urged Pool supporters to remain patient, as they look to install a new manager capable of guiding the club in the Second Division next season.

"We will be looking to make an appointment within the next two weeks," he said.

"I realise that the fans are anxious for us to name the manager, but we need to be comfortable with the final decision."
