BURGLARS made off with cash and goods worth hundreds of pounds after two raids in a village on the same night.

The gang targeted Leadgate Community Tea Rooms and the Golden Lion pub, both in Front Street, Leadgate, near Consett, on Monday night.

They broke into a detached garage at the charity-run centre and stole a petrol lawnmower, strimmer, power washer and steamer.

Police believe the same thieves were responsible for the overnight raid on the Golden Lion pub.

The burglars forced open a fire door at the back of the building and got into the bar, where they stole cash from two fruit machines and tried to break open the jukebox and the pool table.

PC Graeme Whitfield, of Consett Police, said: "We are probably looking at the same people for both.

"The burglary at the Tea Rooms was particularly unpleasant, as it is a charity and they had worked hard to raise the money to buy all those goods. Now they will have to start again."
