A MOTORIST who admitted driving while disqualified and being over the drink-drive limit, narrowly escaped jail yesterday.
Steven Johns was told by magistrates in Darlington that in the "normal course of events" he would have been sent to prison. Johns, 22, of Kirkstone Place, Newton Aycliffe, pleaded guilty to two counts of driving while banned, two of driving without insurance, two of obstructing a police officer and one of driving while over the drink-drive limit.
The court was told he had outstanding fines of almost £800.
Chairman of the bench David Irwin said a pre-sentence report had persuaded the magistrates to impose a 12-month community rehabilitation order.
Johns was also disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pay £100 prosecution costs.
