A baby boy has died in a tragic accident in his cot.

Shane Bland, aged six months, is believed to have become trapped between the mattress and the bars of his cot.

Shane was discovered unconscious by his parents at their home in Byker, Newcastle.

He was rushed to Newcastle General Hospital's intensive care unit where he was put on a life support machine.

But tragically the tot died on Thursday afternoon with his mother and father at his beside.

Police initially launched an enquiry into the circumstances of Shane's death but are not treating it as suspicious after an initial investigation.

Paramedics were called to the house on Wednesday lunchtime after Shane was found.

He was revived and placed on a ventilator at the hospital, receiving 24- hours care.

Home Office pathologist Dr James Sunter has prepared a report and an inquest will be opened.

A Northumbria police spokesman said: "A baby has died in tragic circumstances and a report is being prepared for the coroner."
