A FORMER dentist is the new man in charge of protecting the health of people living in the Durham dales.

David Landes has been appointed director of public health for the Durham Dales Primary Care Trust after working as acting director since August last year.

Before that he spent five years as consultant in dental public health for the former County Durham and Darlington Health Authority where he was responsible for children's services, asylum seekers and maternity services.

Mr Landes worked as a dentist for eight years in the East and West Midlands until 1994 when he joined the Northern and Yorkshire Region as senior registrar in dental and public health.

He is looking forward to his new role, in which he will work closely with local government, education and other agencies to support improvements in health.

He said: "With the challenges I hope that there will also be rewards in achieving success in delivering the health improvement agenda."
