DETECTIVES in Chester-le-Street are warning people to secure their gardening equipment.
Police say that although there is often an increase in shed and garden break-ins at this time of year, they have noticed an unusually big increase since April.
The thieves have been at work in most parts of Chester-le-Street, with the Garden Farm estate and The Avenues area being particularly badly hit.
The burglaries have been taking place at all times of day and night, with lawnmowers, strimmers and other power tools being targeted.
Detective Constable Mick Kirtley, from Chester-le-Street CID, said: "Anyone wanting advice or good-quality shed locks can contact the local crime prevention officer at Chester-le-Street police station.
"Try and make it as difficult as you can for the thieves, and be aware of what you might be leaving on view through the shed or garage window."
For crime prevention advice, call PC John Hedley on 0191-388 4311.
