A TEENAGE girl who was struck by two cars on Monday evening has died in hospital.
Sarah Temple, 16, suffered serious head injuries in the accident on the A167 near Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.
The accident happened at about 10.15pm at the junction with Ricknall Lane, near the Gretna Green pub, and involved two vehicles.
A Renault Megane was travelling south when a Peugeot 306 pulled out to overtake it. The 16-year-old stepped off the pavement and was struck by both cars.
Sarah, from Finchale Road, Newton Aycliffe, was initially taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital but later switched to the intensive care unit at Middlebrough General Hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries.
The drivers of the cars, who are both local, escaped injury.
PC Ian Haigh, of the accident investigation unit, said: "It is possible the collision may have been seen by pedestrians in the area or the occupants of passing vehicles."
