THE bride-to-be had something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue - but one of life's bare necessities was going to be missing on her big day.

Lisa Hornsby, 24, of Seaham, County Durham, was horrified when she was told the water supply at her home would be cut off today, her wedding day.

But, after The Northern Echo intervened, Northumbrian Water agreed to pull out the stops to ensure the water would remain on, so she could get ready to marry Andrew Streatfield.

Miss Hornsby said: "I got a card through the door on Saturday morning saying the water would be off for 36 hours on Thursday, and most of the day on Friday, as well as my wedding day.

"I just burst into tears because I have got my mum and all the bridesmaids staying over the night before and, obviously, we all need showers.

"We could not really go anywhere else because we have got the photographer and the wedding cars organised to come here before the service.

"I rang the company in tears and they confirmed what the letter had said.

"I just could not believe what was happening on the most important day of my life."

But Northumbrian Water - which is carrying out the work to improve water pressure in the area - pledged to make sure Miss Hornsby's day would not be ruined.

A spokesman said: "We cannot turn the water into wine but, for the big day, we will try to pull out all the stops to make the water flows.

"We are prepared to invest a few hundred pounds extra on the scheme to install a valve which will mean, after relining work, the happy couple's supply will not have to be switched off again. All being well, they will have their water supply back."
